Its Beginning To Feel A Lot Like Christmas, The Poem.

Just some background this was a Writing Group prompt, the title is the entire prompt, in celebration of Christmas and a, I want to say friend but honestly, support worker has been working on poetry lately.

Its beginning to feel a lot like Christmas,

Sold out signs in every store.

You’ve planned and plotted for ages but still you need some more.

Panic sets in every time you wake,

Panic so strong you shiver and shake.

You pray for a disaster, a mid-size earthquake,

But would even that, stop Christmas.

Decorate the tree. Clean the house.

If you can’t find the ears, can you still be the mouse?

Its in the ‘Cat Carol’, so Cat’s bound to grouse,

“Its supposed to be part of Christmas,”

“Tradition is lame!” claims one disgruntled child.

“Change is terrifying,” No, Tabby’s been riled.

Urine filled cats look for presents, fresh piled.

Why do they do this for Christmas?

Every night there’s a routine to mess up;

Search for lights, fight over carols, yell ‘shut up’,

4 versions of ‘12 days’ danced by a bewildered pup.

When did this become our Christmas?

6 Advent calendars, 6 chances to fight.

Missed days to catch up. Will we ever get it right?

Get to bed for god’s sake, and please, sleep tight.

When are we finishing Christmas?

But we’re not ready yet!

There’s still presents to get!

Barely one gift for any pet.

Please, can’t you slow down Christmas.

I’m dreading each day,

When we give presents away,

Is that joy or dismay?

You only get one chance at Christmas.

All too soon its Christmas Eve,

Our panic starting to relieve,

Santa’s still to come and leave…

The children, to fight, over Christmas.

  1. Wonderful job.

    1. Thank you and Happy New Year.

  2. I’ve got to agree, Christmas is a total stressfest! I blame advertising.

    1. Advertising certainly plays a strong role especially advertising pretending to be entertainment ie movies etc. But give the family unit its due.

  3. Love the imagery. Perfectly captures what Christmas feels like right before the big day. Merry Christmas!

    1. Thank you, enjoy the season. I hope your cats, tree and gifts didn’t hurt each other.

      1. We all survived, more or less intact. Thank you
